తపస్సు తప్పక చెయ్యాలి.

నైవాక్రుతిః ఫలతి, నైవశీలం, న కులం
విద్యాపినైవ, న చ యత్న క్రుతాపి సేవా
భాగ్యాని, పూర్వ తపసాఖులు సంచితాని
కాలేఫలంతి పురుషస్య యధైవ వుక్షాః
(నీతిశతకం-98)

పురుషునకు ఆకారం - అందమైన రూపంగాని, కులంగాని, శీలం - నడవడి కాని, విద్యగాని, ప్రయత్న పూర్వకంగా చేసిన సేవగాని ఫలాన్నివ్వలేవు. పురాక్రుతమైన అంటే పూర్వజన్మలో చేసికొన్న తపస్సువల్ల కలిగే భాగ్యమే వ్రుక్షాలు వాటి వాటి కాలంలో ఫలాలనిచ్చినట్లుగా ఫలాన్నిస్తుంది. కనుక తపస్సు తప్పక చెయ్యాలి. పనసాది వ్రుక్షాలు కాలంలో ఫలాలనిచ్చినట్లు, పూర్వపుణ్య సంచిత భాగ్యములు ఫలప్రదమౌతాయి.

नैवाक्रुतिः फलति, नैवशीलं, न कुलं
विद्यापिनैव, न च यत्न क्रुतापि सेवा
भाग्यानि, पूर्व तपसाखुलु संचितानि
कालेफलंति पुरुषस्य यधैव वुक्षाः

Neither a handsome or a beautiful physical form nor caste nor character nor conduct or behaviour, nor education nor intended service will yield results. As trees offer fruits during their respective seasons, so also human beings receive fruits of their penance of past births. One should, therefore, do penance. As trees give fruits when due, so also the virtuous and righteous actions of last births will bear fruit in this life when ripe.
